Do I Matter Enough?

by Angie O

While grocery shopping after the Holiday's I noticed the January 09 issue of O Magazine and did a double take at the cover. For any of you that have it or have seen it I am sure you did the same. I am an avid Oprah fan. I used to schedule my college classes around the time of the show. I have watched her up and down weight battle and empathized at how public that has been for her. I always cheered her success and then watched her weight creep back up asking myself "is she gaining it back" before the public announcement from her that "I have slipped again"! For any of us battling weight, we can all imagine what that must be like. Everyday in the public eye as they wage war on such a private battle.

After the magazine hit the stands, then the informercials hit " I can't believe I have done it again" and the announcement of a "Best Life" series starting on her 09 shows. Addressing REALITY. Oprah says "money, fame and success don't mean anything if you can't control your own being. It doesn't mean anything if you can't fit into your clothes," she says. "It means the fat won. It means you didn't win. … I am mad at myself. I am embarrassed." After all these years, Oprah says she can't believe she's still discussing this topic. "With all the other things that I know how to do and all the other things that I'm so great at and all the other accomplishments, I can't believe I'm still talking about weight," she says.

This year I {Angie} have had success losing weight. But, after watching "Biggest Loser", I could have lost more. I am CLEAR I have to CHANGE what I THINK about exercise because I am only disappointing and cheating myself. "It's too hard“ and “I don't have time" are EXCUSES. It is not supposed to be comfortable or easy!!!

Even though I see myself now slimmer, I still somewhere deep have the thought "how long can I keep it off" and the fear of being back to my starting point is one I have to constantly address and defeat. It is a day by day decision to make this lifestyle change, and WE BELIEVE that our accountability piece is what will keep you on track. Your accountability partner will remind you that it is not 3 days on and 1 off that will keep it moving. He/She will call you out on it! Something I got out of the "Best Life" webcast I participated in this past Monday is that we will go out of our way to not disappoint other people, but we continually disappoint ourselves when we don't make time and embrace things like exercise, that contribute to our well being. I encourage you all to go to the Oprah website and watch the download of the Bob Greene webcast. It was a well put together program. For me, the most important part was learning to be honest with myself and value pleasing me more than I value pleasing other people. Can't explain that to you because you I don't want to influence what you might get for yourself from the webcast. But today, ask yourself "Do I matter enough"?
